EXPERT EMPLOYMENT LAW SOLUTIONS

I am an experienced employment law barrister, having been called to the Bar in 1999. I have sat as an employment judge for the past 11 years. I represent parties in employment tribunals, provide advice on workplace problems and assist with the resolution of disputes.

I am a qualified workplace mediator and have many years’ experience as a judicial mediator helping parties to a tribunal dispute reach settlement. I am a relevant independent advisor and can advise on settlement agreements.

Because of my experience and training I am skilled at working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and with vulnerable clients.

I deliver services to the following groups of people:

SOLICITORS AND LICENSED ACCESS

I take instructions from solicitors on a referral basis. I provide advice in writing and/or by conference, drafting and representation in the tribunal and/or employment appeal tribunal (‘EAT’).

EMPLOYEES (DIRECTLY VIA THE PUBLIC ACCESS SCHEME)

I can advise on workplace disputes and on settlement agreements. I can advise whether any proposed settlement is fair and can negotiate with the employer to achieve terms of settlement that are more favourable. If you contact me about your case I can tell you what fees you are likely to incur. The standard fee I charge for settlement agreements is £500 but if there is more work involved I will quote this to you in advance. I will use my best endeavours to ensure the negotiations fall within the standard fixed fee.

I also provide services to represent employees in the employment tribunal. You do not have to engage me for the whole of the litigation. If you simply want me to advise on your case and draft the claim form I will do this. If you want me to represent you at the tribunal I will also do this. I will quote fees in advance so that you know what you are paying before I commit to doing any work.

At the moment I do not have qualification to conduct litigation so if you need to correspond with the tribunal or submit forms you will have to do this yourself. I can guide you through.

EMPLOYERS (DIRECTLY VIA THE PUBLIC ACCESS SCHEME)

I advise employers and HR advisors on workplace disputes and how to manage them. I am a qualified and experienced mediator and can be engaged impartially to mediate an employment dispute between employees. I can also be engaged to draft a response, provide advice on merits and appear in the employment tribunal. I will provide a quotation in advance once you tell me more about your situation and will not commit to doing any work until you are satisfied with the quote.

TIMESCALES

Timescales for a case may vary depending on factors such as my availability, the type and complexity of the case, the other side’s approach and court waiting times.

The prescribed period for the resolution of settlement agreements is 10 days but once instructed I will negotiate a resolution as soon as possible. If I am unable to do so because of other commitments I will let you know straight away and refer you elsewhere to someone who has capacity.

REGULATORY AND COMPLAINTS INFORMATION

Barristers in chambers are regulated by the Bar Standards Board. You can search the Barristers’ Register on the Bar Standards Board’s website: https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/for-the-public/search-a-barristers-record/thebarristers- register.html. This shows (1) whether a barrister has a current practising certificate, and (2) whether a barrister has any disciplinary findings, which are published on the Bar Standards Board’s website in accordance with their policy. Alternatively, you can contact the Bar Standards Board on 020 7611 1444 to ask about this (or e-mail ContactUs@BarStandardsBoard.org.uk).

A separate sheet will be provided to you once you instruct me which provides information about:

  • My complaints procedure;

  • Any right you may have to complain to the Legal Ombudsman (LeO) – the independent body which can help you if you have complained to your lawyer and are not happy with their response;

  • How to complain to LeO; and

  • Any time limits for making a complaint.

    You can also search the decision data on LeO’s website:

    https://www.legalombudsman.org.uk/information-centre/data-centre/ombudsman-decision- data/ . This shows providers which received an ombudsman’s decision in the previous 12 months, and whether LeO required the provider to give the consumer a remedy. Alternatively, you can contact LeO on 0300 555 0333 to ask about this (or e-mail enquiries@legalombudsman.org.uk).
